Swiss design registration

Switzerland is not a member of the European Union, and an EU design gives no protection there. A company that sells to Swiss customers or has Swiss distributors needs a separate Swiss design registered with the Swiss Federal Institute of Intellectual Property (IPI) in Bern. Our branch office in Felsberg in the canton of Graubünden handles Swiss filings and serves as your address for service in Switzerland. The fixed attorney fee is 300 EUR.

Official fees

The IPI charges a basic fee of 200 CHF per design including publication of one image. Each additional image costs 20 CHF, so a design with six images costs 300 CHF. Several designs of the same Locarno class can be combined in one application. Each further design adds 100 CHF, and the basic fees of a multiple application are capped at 700 CHF. Publication fees for additional images are charged on top. Official fees are paid in Swiss francs.

Term of protection

The Swiss design right arises on registration. Protection runs for five years from filing and can be renewed four times for five years each, up to 25 years (Art. 5 DesG). Publication can be deferred for up to 30 months.

Use your priority

If you have already filed the design in the EU or elsewhere, the Swiss application can claim that priority within six months of the first filing. Do not let this period pass. More background is on our design registration overview.

Prices are net attorney fees. The VAT treatment depends on your country and on the office through which we act, and is shown in our quote. Official fees are paid separately and are listed above.
